The most amazing thing about baking soda is that it’s very cheap. You can do all these things for a very small cost. Baking soda is truly a miracle product, whether it’s used for baking or not.

**Note fromhttp://www.healthyhomecookin.com/health_tips_pgs/tips_baking_powder.htm

Ener-G baking powder is two ingredients: calcium carbonate and citric acid. Both are simple, natural ingredients.? It reacts with liquid so time is of the essence. Mix quickly and thoroughly, then put it into the oven as soon as possible.? It can be purchased at health food stores and Azure Standard

Problems with 'regular' baking powder and baking soda are two fold. The aluminum and the soda or sodium bicarbonate.

Aluminum may cause an inhibition of intestinal absorption of phosphorus and this may be followed by an increase in calcium loss. The effect is probably due to the binding of dietary phosphorus in the intestine by the aluminum. (Spencer & Lender, 1979). Much has been written on the harmful effects of aluminum.

As for sodium bicarbonate The Poison Control Center lists baking soda under poisons, with directions what to do if swallowed!! Many dieticians recommend avoiding baking soda because it interferes with nutrition absorption and can lead to inflammation of joints, etc.

?The use of soda or baking powder?is harmful and unnecessary. Soda causes inflammation of the stomach, and often poisons the entire system.? Counsels on Diet and Foods p342

The body makes sodium bicarbonate to neutralize stomach acids after digestion is complete. But when you eat foods with baking soda in them (almost all baking powders contain soda) you impede the digestion right from the start. Poor digestion, poor absorption of nutrients, increase of toxin build up, and so on.

The best thing for your health is to avoid baking powder and baking soda in your baking. Leave baking soda in the fridge to deodorize it.

Many Uses of Colloidal Silver

 Back to the Basics

Colloidal silver was the most common antibiotic in use until 1938. It is a natural antibiotic, anti viral, and antifungal and can be used externally or internally with little chance of side effects or overdose. It is inexpensive, easily bought without a prescription and best of all, bacteria that has become immune to antibiotics has no i...mmunity to colloidal silver.

So, why isn't it being used more?

History of Colloidal Silver

When medical technology started gearing up in the late 1800s researchers found that all of the body's fluids were colloidal in nature. This means that blood, for example, is made up of particles suspended in a fluid.

Silver had long been used for its antibacterial qualities and so doctors began to look for ways to create a colloid that would easily be absorbed into the body. That was realized with the advent of electricity. In 1924, the first electro-colloidal silver was produced and over the next several years the technique was perfected.

This was not the first time silver had been used for its antibacterial properties. In 4000 B.C. Persian records indicate that water was kept in silver vessels to produce antibacterial and disinfectant qualities in it. The Romans used silver compounds on the battle field to treat wounds as did the Crusaders in the Middle Ages.

The pioneers in America, and even people up into the early 1900s used silver coins and flatware in jugs of milk to keep it fresh and good at room temperature.

Did you ever wonder where the term, blue blood, comes from?

Royalty and the upper classes used to use silver as medicine as well as eat from silver plates using silver flatware. They drank water which had been stored in silver pitchers from silver cups. Because of all of the silver particles they ingested their skin literally turned blue. This condition, Argyria, is caused by excessive intake of silver particles over a long period of time. Other than blue skin the condition is not dangerous.

The effectiveness of colloidal silver has been proven and accepted by science as fact. However, it was costly to produce and not as fast acting as some of the new antibiotics that were being discovered. Doctors began prescribing the new wonder drugs and silver was largely forgotten.

Improper Use Over Time Can Lead to Blue Skin

Synthetic Antibiotics Create Resistant Diseases

Unfortunately what the doctors did not know was that over time, and with misuse, the synthetic antibiotics actually produced antibiotic resistant bacteria.

The Center for Disease Control in Atlanta reported in the year 2000 that over 70,000 people died in hospitals in the United States from infections that resisted synthetic drugs.

Bacteria that are very common such as those that lead to ear infections or pneumonia are evolving into forms that are currently untreatable. We are creating super bugs. MRSA is one of these new, resistant microbes.

Is Colloidal Silver the Answer?

In the late 1970s a doctor by the name of Robert O. Becker was doing research on regeneration of spinal chords, organs and limbs. He discovered that silver promoted bone growth as well as destroying harmful bacteria in the surrounding area. More tests were run and the results were that colloidal silver is a broad spectrum antimicrobial. It successfully destroyed the following:

  • E. coli
  •

  •  Pink eye

  • bronchial infections
  •

  • urinary tract infections
  •

  • wound infections
  •

  • strep
  •

  • Anthrax
  •

  • staph
  •

  • typhoid
  •

  • many more
  •

Since colloidal silver is considered a pre 1938 drug by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) it is approved for over the counter sales.

How to Use Colloidal Silver

Colloidal Silver comes in two basic strengths, 50 ppm and 500 ppm. It is important to have both on hand because they treat different things.

For eye infections, nose drops, or ears the 50 ppm is better to use and less likely to sting. For illnesses and infections that need to be treated internally the 500 ppm is the best choice.

The colloidal silver should be kept in a dark place, and always buy it bottled in a dark, glass bottle.

Generally, if you are treating an illness taking one ounce four times a day of the 500ppm is effective. It is nearly impossible to ovedose on it and the blue side effect only happens with very heavy use over a long period of time. Years, not weeks or months.

Other uses for colloidal silver are:

  • Silver stimulates plant growth
  •

  • Rinse your fruit and vegetables before storin. This will make them last longer and stay fresh.
  •

  • Toothaches and canker sores are diminished and itkills the bacteria of gingivitis.
  •

  • Use on fingernail, toenail, and ear fungi.
  •

  • Spray in shoes and between toes to kill athletes foot and fungi.
  •

  • Add to drinking water when traveling or camping, or in emergency situations when clean drinking water is suspect.
  •

Make Colloidal Silver at Home

Colloidal silver is an excellent resource to have in your medicine cabinet. It should be part of everyone's first aid and emergency kits.

Learning to use colloidal silver in all of the possible ways means having a source of alot of colloidal silver...

That can get expensive, right?

Not necessarily. You see, it is a simple thing to make your own colloidal silver, and does not cost much at all.

You will need to make or buy a generator. It is less than $50 dollars to make one that will make as much colloidal silver as you could ever need. Here are some excellent resource links with instructions:

How to Make Colloidal Silver

Throughout the centuries and well into our modern time, silver in its various forms has been used by mankind to great effect. Milk farmers would use a silver bucket to collect the milk. The raw milk could then be left unrefrigerated for many hours without the chance of spoiling. It's also interesting to note that some cultures would add crushed silver to a newborn's first bath as a measure of protection against a threatening world.

It may surprise you to know that amongst our early settlers it was known that by throwing a silver dollar into their drinking wells and water receptacles, they were able to keep the water drinkable by killing off any bacteria that was likely present. In effect they were creating their own medicinal colloidal silver preparation. Did you know that the phrase "being born with a silver spoon in one's mouth" was actually coined during the period where plagues were frequent in Europe, in which affluent families would give their children silver spoons to suck on.

The History of Silver

How Long has Silver Been used for?

Silver has been used for thousands of years medicinally, and has been proven itself as enormously deadly against pathogens...

Even since the days before Christ, silver has been used medicinally to fight disease. For a very long time, silver was the number one antimicrobial tool used by doctors. In fact, in the year 69 B.C. silver nitrate was written about extensively in the contemporary  pharmacopoeia.

A the turn of the century, silver was used extensively, and was a proven and accepted microbe killer. Colloidal silver was in fact the main tool that doctors used in treating infectious diseases.  Up until 1938, over 650 fungi, yeast, viruses and bacteria were considered treatable with colloidal silver.

At the height of its use, from 1900 - 1939, there were over 96 different colloidal silver formulations in use. This was documented extensively by the Council on Pharmacy and Chemistry belonging to the American Medical Association, with many of the formulations being administered intravenously.

During this period, many physicians of note used silver nitrate extensively for all manner of pathologies and acute bacterial infections. Wound dressings were liberally infused with silver nitrate before application, with boils and internal infections being injected at the site of infection with this solution. Even to this day silver is used to treat gonorrheal ophthalmia, with the technique being pioneered back in 1881 by Carl Crede.

Unfortunately, the use of  colloidal silver fell dramatically when in 1942 the U.S government purchased the rights to patent the now well known penicillin. However, Zhao and Stevens have recently stated for the record that "With the rise of antibiotic - resistant bacteria, silver is re - emerging as a modern medicine because all pathogenic organisms have failed to develop an immunity to it (silver ion)."

COLLOIDAL SILVER BENEFITS:

-Disease organisms are killed- testimonials for every affliction

-Electro-colloidal micro-water increases blood alkalinity

-Algae minimized in hydroponics & aquaculture–Ick eliminated

-Animal stocks healthier without pharmaceutical antibiotics

-Dangerous viral mutations from antibiotic overuse eliminated

-Cut flower life extended 3-fold

-Water purification & shelf-life extension...CS bottling now illegal in the EU except when labeled for this use

-Colloidal silver also offers many benefits for your skin.

Alfred Searle, of pharmaceutical giant Searle Labs researched colloidal silver and wrote a book on it. 112 pharmaceutical silver drugs were ultimately patented.

Disease Organisms are Killed

Colloidal silver drugs were historically used on a now growing list if 132 ailments and people gained from their use, particularly for infection. This goes especially for all the varieties of Staph, and would include today's particularly virulent strain of MRSA or Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus. The other simple disease organism in the news today- Salmonella, is dealt with in a 1/2 hour.

One top virologist pointed out that thirty-three of the top forty diseases are infectious and caused by pathogens so add free colloidal silver benefits to your list. His list includes 80% of all coronary disease- seemingly caused by C. pneumoniae, that precipitates inflammation and plaque build-up, thus occluding arteries, and even the brains blood supply, perhaps being the cause of Alzheimer’s.

In a 1999 Atlantic monthly, top virologist Ewald stated: Sacroidosis, Bowel Disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus Granulomatosis, Diabetes, Billiary Cirrhosis, Sprue, Kawasaki Disease, Lyme, Leprosy and TB are known to be caused by organisms.

The list of diseases that Ewald suspects as being caused by a particular organism include Heart disease, Arteriosclerosis,  cancers, Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, ovarian cysts, obesity, eating disorders and most major psychiatric disorders.

Still other diseases, which by the way colloidal silver benefits, that are suspected as being caused by untreated streptococcus infections or a lingering immune response resulting from some past infection, like Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Pediatric Auto-Immune Neuropsychiatric Disorder (PANDA) and even Schizophrenia- Menninger suspected that in 1920!

It's always been known- silver is the best all-around germ fighter but it was mostly removed from America’s official Pharmacy back in 1975 when Dr. Bob Beck introduced his original 3-battery electro-colloidal silver generator.

The Pharmaceutical conglomerates see the writing on the wall and the things the FDA Drug Thugs do at their behest isn’t pretty. But the cat’s out of the bag and silver is homemade medicine again.

Water purifiers with silver impregnated filters led the parade

The Russians used them on their space station to kill disease organisms in recycled body fluids. Now there are silver impregnated bandages and silver thread is being used for healing gloves and socks. New air ducts are being made from silver-coated metal to kill air-borne diseases and refrigerators are now manufactured with a silver lining. Professional kitchens now even have silver coated stainless steel counter surfaces.

Colloidal silver benefits us by creating micro-water

The Japanese discovered how to electrically separate water into two parts: acid and alkaline. This alters the hydrogen and oxygen bonds and creates smaller particles or micro-water. Most people buy micro-cluster water rather than a machine to make it. Tests show colloidal silver water alkalizes the blood in almost the same way as coral calcium. Colloidal silver alkalizes to assist against parasites & yeast infections too. Just Ask a Nurse. She'll likely tell you to make and take low PPM batches throughout the day for yet even more alkalizing colloidal silver benefits. Sometimes the right water puts a new spin on life.

Anecdote: Colloidal silver liquid saves lives

The first person to tell me it had saved their life was Dr. Judd of Phoenix Arizona. As a chemistry professor he was so excited after seeing a colloidal silver machine operate that he had to have one. He called five days after we shared an hour together and exclaimed how he had been healed of an affliction: an antibiotic resistant, post-operative cardio-pulmonary infection had continued to plague him after completing two rounds of pharmaceutical antibiotics. He faced using the strongest patented antibiotic at 78 years of age. He used colloidal silver without hesitation. Days later he claimed it had saved his life! He has now passed on- so it seems fair to share this. He was tenured by Phoenix Community College and wouldn’t offer a testimonial- but he did help spur me on so that you could get a proper dose of colloidal silver benefits.

Many Uses of Charcoal

Back to Basics

TRANSFERRED

There are so many activated charcoal uses that it's hard to know where to begin. Activated charcoal is one of the most non-toxic, absorbitive substances known to man and is highly underused. This amazing material is also called activated carbon.

I make my own heavy duty body scrub with a big helping of activated charcoal. It's fun g...etting "dirty" and black then rinsing off skin that is purified, satin smooth, and totally prepped for globs of moisturizer that melts right into my skin. Needless 2 say, my skin is to die for. Add some scrubby gloves to the ritual and welcome the skin that has been hiding since you were a babe.

So, what is activated charcoal?

Food grade activated charcoal is usually made by heating wood or nutshells to an extremely high temperatures and/or oxidizing by exposing the raw material to steam or air. This process makes the carbon extremely porous. So porous, that one gram of activated charcoal can have a surface area equal to two tennis courts! There are other ways to make activated charcoal using chemicals so be sure to buy only "food grade" charcoal.

Activated charcoal can be used for water filitration, improving your soil, removing odors and even for the health and beauty of you, your pets and livestock!

ALERT! Activated charcoal should never be taken within two hours of any medication or supplement as it will absorb the medicine and render it ineffective!

HEALTH CHARCOAL

"Charcoal medicine" has been used by hospitals and Naturopathic doctors for numerous ailments and drug overdoses. It is available in health food and supplement stores usually in capsule form but you can also find it in bulk. Because of its many uses and indefinite shelf life it's a great item to keep in the medicine chest.

ACTIVATED CHARCOAL USES FOR FOOD POISONING

Unfortunatly, food poisoning is becoming more and more common in this age of mass produced food. Activated charcoal has the ability to cure food poisoning by absorbing the toxins and bacteria. It will ease vomiting and stomach cramps from the flu and even cure a dogs upset stomach!

ACTIVATED CHARCOAL USES FOR POISONS AND OVERDOSES

Charcoal can absorb many toxins and prevent them from entering the body. Activated charcoal should be given as soon as possible if there is suspected poisoning or overdose. CALL POISON CONTROL OR A HOSPITAL IMMEDIATELY! They can tell you what dosage to give. Having charcoal on hand can save a life!

Our dogs, cats, birds and livestock can come in contact with toxics plants, fertilizers and pesticides, spoiled garbage, blue-green algae, flea products, grapes, chocolate or many other toxins that can threaten their lives.

Call your veterinarian for dosage but here's a guideline for using charcoal for animal poisoning:

* The recommended dose of activated charcoal for all species of animals is 1-3 grams of charcoal per 1 kg body weight.

Though activated charcoal can absorb more than 4,000 poisons, drugs, heavy metals, etc., here are a few it does not absorb well: Cyanide, ethanol, ethylene glycol, iron, lithium, methanol, mineral acids and salts are poorly adsorbed.

ACTIVATED CHARCOAL USES FOR HEALTH CONDITIONS

Charcoal can also draw toxins through the skin so it can be used externally too. A simple poultice along with internal use can be very effective home remedies against abcesses, tumors, infections, wounds, poison ivy, pink eye, snake bites, spider bites, hemorrhoids, earaches and much more.

Don't forget that this natural remedy works for animals also! My dog recently had a strawberry sized tumor on his leg which the vet diagnosed as a histiocytoma. This is a benign tumor but he said it would probably have to be surgically removed. I promptly brought Toby home and applied an activated charcoal poultice that night. I did this three nights in a row and by the third night it was half the size! Within a week it looked like he was only missing a patch of hair. This is amazing stuff!

HOW TO MAKE A CHARCOAL MEDICINE POULTICE

  1. Mix charcoal (1 to 2 Tbs.) with a little water (you can also mix in a little corn starch to help it stay moist) to form a wet paste. It should be moist but not crumbly or drippy.
  2. Spread the paste on one half of a folded paper towel, thin cloth, or piece of gauze cut to fit the area to be treated. (For a small area, empty a teabag and fill with charcoal) When ready the cloth should be moist, and thoroughly saturated with the paste.
  3. Then cover the paste by folding over the other half of the paper towel or cloth.
  4. Next place the charcoal poultice on the affected body part making sure it completely covers the area.
  5. Cover the poultice with plastic (when available, plastic food wrap works fine) cut to overlap the poultice by an inch on every side. This will keep it from drying out. If the charcoal dries out, it will not be able to adsorb.
  6. Finish off by bandaging or taping the poultice securely in place. Leave it on for several hours, or better yet, overnight. After 6 to 10 hours another poultice can be applied.

When using charcoal internally you can fight gas, bloating, diarrhea, acid indigestion, colic, liver disease, peptic ulcers, hangovers and more. Activated charcoal is not meant for long time use but can help with detoxing and cut your healing time greatly!

ACTIVATED CHARCOAL USES FOR ODORS

There are many commercial products coming out using charcoal to:

  • Remove odors from the home such as pets, smoke, garbage, paint, fumes, closets, musty basements and diaper pails.
  • Remove odors from stinky feet and shoes
  • Remove skunk odor
  • Remove odors from animal barns
  • Remove odors from sick rooms
  • Elliminate chemical smells
  • Etc.

You can make your own by buying charcoal in bulk and making sachets or by simply poking holes in a can or jar and filling!

ACTIVATED CHARCOAL USES FOR PLANTS AND GARDENS

By using charcoal in the garden you can improve soil drainage, reduce soil compaction, increase nutrients, give greater retention of water in dry soils, improve germination plus improve plant resistance to fungal disease and insect infestations. It will also absorb many herbicides, heavy metals and other toxins in your soil.

It's a great natural fertilizer and an environmentaly friendly insecticide!

There's just too many activated charcoal uses to list! You can help by listing your own below! No need to sign up or worry about us sharing your email address. It's free and easy!

I keep a large jar with a fifty fifty mix of powdered activated charcoal and white sugar in my pantry. If my goats ever have the misfortune of eating something toxic to them, I put out a big bowl of this mix. My goats gobble it right up since they love sweets. The charcoal binds the toxins. This either takes care of the entire problem or keeps things from progressing and getting worse until the vet gets there. It has literally been a life (many lives) saver for me and those ruminants I so dearly love.

Many uses of Vodka

Back to Basics

Vodka is made from either grain, rye, wheat, potatoes or sugar beet molasses as the primary ingredients combined with yeast in order to generate alcohol. After distillation, the product is almost pure ethyl alcohol and is watered down before bottling, after which it usually has an alcohol content of between 35 - 50%.

Aside from drinki...ng, vodka has many other uses, some that can replace environmentally harsh chemicals we use around the home.

Thanks to its basic mixture of pure alcohol and water, vodka can be used as a strong household cleaner, pesticide and so much more. Bonus: it's a non-toxic alternative to many traditional products and chemicals.

Given the lack of ingredients in unflavored vodka, it can be used as a substitute for many cleaners with an alcohol, caustic or solvent base, without leaving the item smelling like liquor.

Of course, good vodka isn't cheap; so many of the the following ideas I found around the place are based on the assumption you have lost the taste for the stuff; or if you find yourself in a spot of bother and don't have anything else to use... or if you have a good supply of dirt cheap vodka :).

Remember to always spot test before going all out with any of these suggested uses.

1. To remove a bandage painlessly, saturate the bandage with vodka. The solvent dissolves the adhesive.

2. To clean the caulking around bathtubs and showers, fill a trigger-spray bottle with vodka, spray the caulking, let set five minutes and wash clean.  The alcohol in the vodka kills mold and mildew.

3. To clean your eyeglasses, simply wipe the lenses with a soft, clean cloth dampened with vodka. The alcohol in the vodka cleans the glass and kills germs.

4. Prolong the life of razors by filling a cup with vodka and letting your safety razor blade soak in the alcohol after shaving. The vodka disinfects the blade and prevents rusting.

5. Spray vodka on vomit stains, scrub with a brush, then blot dry.

6. Using a cotton ball, apply vodka to your face as an astringent to cleanse the skin and tighten pores.

7. Add a jigger of vodka to a 12-ounce bottle of shampoo. The alcohol cleanses the scalp, removes toxins from hair, and stimulates the growth of healthy hair.

8. Fill a sixteen-ounce trigger-spray bottle and spray bees or wasps to kill them.

9. Pour one-half cup vodka and one-half cup water in a Ziplock freezer bag, and freeze for a slushy, re-freezable ice pack for aches, pain, or black eyes..

10. Fill a clean, used mayonnaise jar with freshly packed lavender flowers, fill the jar with vodka, seal the lid tightly and set in the sun for three days. Strain liquid through a coffee filter, then apply the tincture to aches and pains.

11. Make your own mouthwash by mixing nine tablespoons powered cinnamon with one cup vodka. Seal in an airtight container for two weeks. Strain through a coffee filter. Mix with warm water and rinse your mouth. Don't swallow.

12. Using a Q-tip, apply vodka to a cold sore to help it dry out.

13. If a blister opens, pour vodka over the raw skin as a local anesthetic that also disinfects the exposed dermis.

14. To treat dandruff, mix one cup vodka with two teaspoons crushed rosemary, let sit for two days, strain through a coffee filter and massage into your scalp and let dry.

29.  Vodka can be used as a glass cleaner. Dilution recommendations vary, 25 - 50% vodka and the balance being water seems to be the general guideline. Use in a spray bottle.

30.  Use it to make vanilla extract. Place 4 vanilla pods in a jar and add a cup of vodka. Use an airtight lid and then place in a cool dark spot. Shake the jar occasionally and after two months you'll have vanilla extract. Top up with vodka as you use it and only add more vanilla pods when it starts to lose potency.

31.  Spray onto old potpourri to revitalize the scent.

32.  Use vodka it to remove hair dye from your skin.

33.  Vodka can help to remove tree sap from car paintwork.

34.  Use undiluted as a weed killer spray.

35.  Spray undiluted into your washing machine to neutralize odors.

36.  For ink and grass stains, dip a clean cloth in vodka and rub spot. Rinse thoroughly. Lipstick on your collar? Blot stain with vodka, then launder in your regular wash.

37.   Preserve Fresh Flowers-Plants all produce ethylene, a ripening gas that promotes maturation. Vodka stunts ethylene production, thereby helping flowers stay wilt-free longer. To keep store-bought flowers fresh, snip an inch off of each stem, add two teaspoons of vodka and one teaspoon sugar. Stir well and repeat this process every few days.

38.   Chemical-Free Weed Killer-With help from the sun's heat, the alcohol content in vodka destroys unwanted broad-leaf weeds -- such as dandelions, chickweed and wild onion -- by breaking down their waxy-cuticle coverings. This action dehydrates and dries plants out. Remove weeds by filling a spray bottle with an ounce of vodka, several drops of liquid dish soap, and two cups of water. On a sunny day, spritz weeds with the solution until dripping wet.

Tip: Direct sunlight is needed for this technique to work, as weeds in the shade won't dry out.

39.  Clean Chrome, Glass and Jewelry-Vodka is effective at making dull bathroom fixtures, chandeliers, eyeglasses, windowpanes and even precious gemstones (only stones that are a crystal, such as diamonds) sparkle like new.

- For chandeliers: Moisten a clean microfiber cloth with vodka and rub over dusty surfaces. Alternatively, you can spritz the chandelier with a solution of one cup water and one teaspoon of vodka in a spray bottle. Lay a drop cloth on the floor to catch drips.

- For chrome: Soak a soft, clean cloth with vodka and shine.

- For eyeglasses: Dip a clean, lint-free cloth in vodka and rub each lens (back and front) until clear.

- For jewelry: Measure out one-fourth cup vodka in a shallow drinking glass or bowl. Drop in jewelry and let soak for 5-10 minutes. Rinse and dry. Tip: Do NOT clean pearls, opals and other porous stones via this method.

- For windowpanes: Mix one cup water and one teaspoon vodka in a spray bottle. Spritz on windows and wipe clean with paper towels or a clean microfiber cloth.

40.  All-Natural Pesticide-Also known as plant lice, aphids are tiny soft-bodied insects that suck the nutrient-rich sap from the stems of plants. To keep aphids off of plants add four cups water, four teaspoons of dishwashing liquid and four teaspoons vodka in a large spray bottle. Shake well and spritz areas where you spot infestations.

41.  Use Vodka to Eliminate Odors-Vodka eradicates foul stenches -- and doesn't leave a scent when it dries. For an odorless air freshener, mix one part vodka with three parts water in a small spray bottle. Spritz area and let dry.

42.  Eliminate swimmer's ear-If you don't have rubbing alcohol, fill an eardropper with vodka, and squeeze it into the affected ear, then let it drain out

43.  Kills bugs in Food storage-Dry food such as rice, wheat, beans, etc. often contains insect eggs and often insects can creep in to eat what is in your "airtight" containers. To keep out the bugs and to kill any that might already be in the food, wet a clean washcloth with Vodka and place it in the container with the food. The Vodka evaporates in the container and kills anything inside but the food remains fresh and no taste is given to the food. Replenish every few months, works great!

44.  LCD screen cleaner-these days everyone seems to have bigger and bigger LCD or LED television screens which are better and brighter to look at, but much harder to keep clean. Water-based cleaners will leave spots and streaks, harsher chemicals may etch the plastic. Try a little cheap vodka on a very soft cloth instead. It's perfect for cleaning dust and fingerprints without damaging the fragile surface.

45.  Sand flea bites-A couple of years ago in Antigua on the beach mu legs were totally bitten with sand fleas. Back at the condo we had no first aid items, but we did have a bottle of Absolute Vodka in the refrigerator. So for three whole days I would wet paper towels with the vodka and rub it on my legs. It dried up the sand flea bites just as well as anything else from the pharmacy would have.

46.  Coolant ingestion- When a child or animal ingests automobile coolant, (ethylene glycol,) it will kill them! It tastes sweet and many succumb to it each year! Forcing them to ingest alcohol, (vodka, for example,) will save their life until you get them to the hospital or the ambulance gets there! The body processes the grain alcohol in preference to the coolant and shunts the coolant on through instead of metabolizing it in the liver and having it crystallize and kill them!!! (This is what actually causes death! It crystallizes in the liver.)

47.  Fill a clean, empty jar with fresh lavender flowers. Pour in vodka, seal the lid and set it in the sun. After 3 days strain the liquid, and apply to aches and pains.

48.  Make herbal tinctures-in a mason jar, add vodka to dried or fresh cut herb- 80 - 100 proof to pour over the herbs, Have on hand 7-10 ounces of chopped fresh herbs for every quart of vodka.  Try to utilize fresh herbs when creating tinctures. When using dried herbs, use 4 ounces of herbs to one pint of the vodka used.

Borax and Its Many Uses!

 Back to Basics

Here is some borax information which will help you decide whether to use this eco-friendly cleaner.

Borax is a wonderful, powerful cleaning agent to add to your arsenal of green and eco-friendly home cleaning products. It was a trusted cleaning product back in Victorian times - it was probably a familiar to most of our great great gra...ndmothers.

his is the most crucial borax information - and yet reports about borax safety give a rather mixed message. Here's what I've gleaned about borax safety.

While borax is safe if used correctly, be sure to read the safety advice below.

Borax is a natural product in that it can be mined. Death Valley in the US has natural deposits of Borax. It can also be synthesised for industrial needs.

It has fallen into relative disuse in recent times, doubtless because of the powerful chemical cleaners which now dominate supermarket shelves. Because of the recent interest in green cleaning materials and green living it is staging a come back.

Borax information: what is it exactly?

The chemical formula for household borax is B4O7Na2. 10H2O. Borax is a name for several different similar chemical compounds, of which probably the commonest is sodium decahydrate. They all contain sodium and boron. Boric acid or boracic acid is an acid which can be derived from borax.

Boron, a valuable trace metal in foods and soils, is quite toxic in excess. In fact, it is so toxic that it can be used as a herbicide. Borax itself is also quite toxic, which means that safe handling and storage are imperative. It's toxic enough to kill ants, fleas and cockroaches and other unwanted insect life.

Its effects upon the environment are not yet well documented but it can be toxic to aquatic life if too concentrated. It is regarded by the Australian government as a low threat to the environment but a moderate threat to health.

Borax needs to be stored carefully because it is toxic if ingested. While this may be unlikely to happen, even by accident, anyone using it should be aware because of the dangers of very young children playing with it.

Even as little as a teaspoonful could prove fatal if swallowed by a young child. For this reason, be very careful if using it anywhere near food and wipe up spills immediately. (See below for safety advice when using borax.)

There is a slight hazard of contamination through skin contact. It may cause irritation and redness from prolonged contact. If you have any cuts or abrasions on your hands you should use rubber gloves when handling it or using it in solution.

Borax can also be bought as a powdered hand soap.

As it comes in a stable, crystalline powder there's very little danger of inhalation. However, if you use it as a fine powder you should protect yourself against inhalation and wear safety goggles.

Borax is related to but not the same as boron - which is now thought to be an essential trace element in human nutrition. Some people take "Borax tablets" as a medicine for a variety of complaints. The amounts of borax contained in these preparations is extremely small and should present no health threat, used correctly.

It is probably easy to get unduly concerned about the safety of borax; if you look at the toxicology data for common salt, it is not that different! Even salt can be hazardous if you ingest too much of it. For most purposes, borax is quite safe if you keep it out of reach of children and take precautions if there is a risk of dust inhalation.

Some people use boracic acid for yeast infections. I've no idea how good or safe this is. Natural health through good nutrition may be a better long-term answer.

Borax information: borax and cleaning

Borax has several different cleaning properties. It can act a little like hydrogen peroxide in that it has a bleaching effect when dissolved in hot water. A reaction occurs in which a little hydrogen peroxide is produced (H2O2). It also enhances the cleaning power of other cleaning agents. Bleach for example, is made stronger by mixing with borax. It has anti-microbial properties and it inhibits moulds and fungal growth. It is quite strongly alkaline, so it's probably best to wear gloves if you are putting it into washing up water or using it for cleaning surfaces. It's not very reactive which means that it can be safely combined with other cleaning products. Don't mix it with acids or store it with acids.

I've been using it for a few weeks now and it's really very good indeed. It's quite safe if used correctly, it's effective and it's fairly cheap. What more could you possibly want?

Here's a look at what it does and what it's good for.

Borax information: use it for general purpose cleaning

  • Borax is a fantastic product for getting rid of grease. Use it around the house, much as you would use washing soda. You can clean sinks and drains by pouring a hot solution down the water ways. Borax works best when combined with hot water.
  • Borax is good for cleaning windows, tiles and enamel surfaces. You can sprinkle a little onto a soft damp cloth - or you can make a solution of about a tablespoonful in 2 or 3 litres of hot water. Use a stronger solution on grubby paintwork.
  • I recently used it for cleaning my bathroom and it was noticeably effective and fast for cleaning tiles and paintwork. There was no detectable smell present, which to me was a bonus.
  • Use it as part of your washing up to get through grease. You can add it to the water along with the washing up liquid. Rinse with clean water after use.
  • You can also use it to clean surfaces such as chopping boards. However you should rinse surfaces thoroughly after use as borax is a little toxic.
  • For cleaning the oven, make up a paste of borax, washing soda and vinegar. Apply it with a brush and leave the mixture to do its work for a few hours. Wipe away the dirt with a damp cloth.
  • Borax can also be used as a deterrent to insects and even mice. Sprinkle it along places where mice run - they don't like getting it on their feet.

Boric acid (boracic acid) is a derivative from borax which is also used for killing insects. It is generally regarded as quite safe. Again, it should not be taken internally nor breathed in, as the chemical may cause respiratory problems. See also the safety advice below for how to use borax responsibly.

Borax information: safety advice

Always keep borax away from food. It is quite toxic if ingested. As little as a teaspoonful could possibly kill a small child or make them quite sick, so keep it well out of reach of children.

For others swallowing borax could provoke gastic upsets. Nevertheless it is regarded by Rio Tinto (who manufacture it in California) as having "low acute toxicity".

  • Shine china.  Add one-half cup 20 Mule Team Borax to a sinkful of warm water, rinse fine china, then rinse again in clean water.

  • Deodorize cat filler. Mix one-and-a-half cups 20 Mule Team Borax to every five pounds of cat filler to reduce and control odor in the cat box.

  • Preserve flowers.   Mix one part 20 Mule Team Borax and two parts corn meal. Fill the bottom one-inch of an empty airtight canister with the mixture. Place the flower on the mixture, then gently cover the flower with more mixture, being careful not to crush the flower or distort the petals. Flowers with a lot of overlapping petals, such as roses and carnations, are best treated by sprinkling mixture directly into the blossom before placing them into the box. Seal the canister and store at room temperature in a dry place for seven to ten days. When the flowers are dried, pour off the mixture and dust the flowers with a soft artist's brush. Borax removes the moisture from blossoms and leaves, preventing the wilting which would normally result.

  • Clean hairbrushes and combs.  Mix a quarter cup 20 Mule Team Borax and a tablespoon of Dawn Dishwashing Liquid in a basin of warm water. Soak hairbrushes and combs in the solution, rinse clean, and dry.

  • Clean a metal coffee pot. Fill the percolator with water and add one teaspoon 20 Mule Team Borax and one teaspoon detergent powder. Boil the water, let the mixture sit for a few minutes, then rinse clean.

  • Clean chocolate from clothing. Sponge the spot with a solution of one tablespoon 20 Mule Team Borax and one cup warm water. Flush with water. If that doesn't work, make a paste with borax and water, work into the stain, let set for one hour, flush well with warm water, and launder as usual.

  • Make children's clothing flame retardant. Mix together nine ounces 20 Mule Team Borax and four ounces boric acid in one gallon water. If the article is washable, soak in the solution after final rinsing, then dry. If the garment is not washable, spray with the solution. This solution, recommended by fire departments, may wash out of clothing and should be used after each washing or dry cleaning.

  • Make your own household cleanser for walls and floors. Add one-half cup 20 Mule Team Borax, one-half teaspoon Dawn Dishwashing Liquid, and one teaspoon ammonia to two gallons warm water.

  • Make your own automatic dishwashing soap. Use equal parts 20 Mule Team Borax and washing soda.

  • Gently clean porcelain and aluminum cookware. Sprinkle 20 Mule Team Borax on pots and pans, rub with a damp dishcloth, and rinse thoroughly.

  • Reduce water spots on glasses and dishes. Add one tablespoon 20 Mule Team Borax to the dishwasher

  • Clean spills and stains on carpet and upholstery. Blot up the spill, sprinkle 20 Mule Team Borax to cover the area, let dry, and vacuum. Before treating, make sure the carpet dye is colorfast by testing an unexposed area with a paste of 20 Mule Team Borax and water. For wine and alcohol stains, dissolve one cup 20 Mule Team Borax in one quart water. Sponge in the solution, wait thirty minutes, shampoo the spotted area, let dry, and vacuum.

  • Deodorize garbage disposers. Sprinkle two to three tablespoons 20 Mule Team Borax in the drain, let it stand for fifteen minutes, then flush with water with the disposer on. Borax helps deodorize garbage disposers by neutralizing acidic odors.

  • Neutralize urine odors from mattresses and mattress covers. Dampen the spot, rub in 20 Mule Team Borax, let dry, then vacuum or brush clean.

  • Neutralize pet urine and sour spilled milk odors. Dampen the spot, rub in 20 Mule Team Borax, let dry, then vacuum or brush clean.

  • Boost laundry detergent. Add one-half cup 20 Mule Team Borax to each washload along with the recommended amount of detergent. For large capacity and front-loading machines, add three-quarter cup. Borax acts as a water conditioner, boosting the cleaning power of detergent by controlling alkalinity, deodorizing the clothes and aiding the removal of stains and soil.

  • Wash diapers and baby clothes. Flush out dirty diapers and soak as soon as possible in a diaper pail filled with warm water and one-half cup 20 Mule Team Borax. Pre-soak for at least thirty minutes before washing in warm water, adding one-half cup borax with the recommended amount of detergent. Wash linens, bibs, slips, and cotton crib liners in hot water, adding one-half cup 20 Mule Team Borax and detergent. Borax helps get rid of odors, reduce staining, and make diapers more absorbent.

  • Wash delicate hand washables. Dissolve one-quarter cup 20 Mule Team Borax and two tablespoons detergent in a basin of warm water. Soak hand washables for ten minutes, rinse in clear, cool water, blot with a towel, lay flat (woolens) or hang to dry (away from sunlight and direct heat).

  • Eliminate bathtub rust stains. Scrub the stains with a paste made from 20 Mule Team Borax and lemon juice.

  • Soften soap and rinse waters. Add one tablespoon of 20 Mule Team Borax per quart of water.

  • Clean and deodorize a refrigerator. Mix one tablespoon 20 Mule Team Borax in one quart warm water. Wash spilled food with a sponge and soft cloth. Rinse with cold water.

  • Keep the water in a humidifier free from odor. Dissolve one tablespoon 20 Mule Team Borax per gallon of water before adding to the unit. Use this treatment once or twice a year.

  • Wash windows. Mix one-quarter cup 20 Mule Team Borax, one-half cup ammonia, and two gallons of water to add more sparkle when cleaning windows.

  • Reduce ash and eliminate smoke problems from candlewicks in homemade candles. Dissolve one tablespoon of table salt and three tablespoons 20 Mule Team Borax in one cup of warm water. Soak heavy twine in the solution for at least 24 hours. Allow the twine to dry thoroughly before using to make candles.

  • Sometimes referred to as "the miracle mineral," this time-honored household ingredient is the natural solution for just about everything under your roof, from cleaning to insect control.

Borax, also known as sodium borate, is an a naturally occurring substance and an eco-friendly solution for many things around the house. Most commonly used as a cleaning agent, the uses extend far beyond that.

    PEST CONTROL

    1. Keep roaches, waterbugs, and ants away by sprinkling a combination of equal parts all-natural borax and sugar.

     2. Keep the mice out by sprinkling borax on the floor along the wall.

     3. Get rid of bed bugs by sprinkling borax on your mattress. Let it sit and vacuum it up.

     4. Kill fleas by sprinkling borax on your carpet. Leave it for an hour and vacuum it up thoroughly.

     CLEANING

     5. Scrub dirty pots and pans with a mixture of 1 teaspoon of borax and warm water. Because borax is non-abrasive, it will work on the grime without damaging the surface material.

     6. Remove a stubborn stain by mixing 1 cup of borax with 2 cups of warm water and apply the paste directly to the stain. Let it sit, then launder as usual. Remove carpet stains by dampening the stain thoroughly and rubbing some borax on it. Vacuum it then finish it off with a vinegar and water solution. Let it dry and repeat if necessary. Use this same method on soiled mattresses. It will get rid of both the odor and stain.

     7. Remove rust by mixing the above solution with a tablespoon of lemon juice.

     8. Make an all-purpose cleaner by mixing 2 tablespoons borax and 2 cups hot water in a spray bottle.

     9. Removes oxidation from metals with borax. The ingredient is also used as a flux in welding.

     10. Make your own floor and wall cleaner by mixing 1/3 cup borax, 1 tablespoons ammonia and 1 teaspoon dish detergent into 1 gallon of water.

     11. As a laundry detergent, add one cup of borax to each load and significantly boost your cleaning power.

     12. Remove stains from stainless steel or porcelain sinks with this recipe: Make a paste with 1 cup borax and 1/4 cup lemon juice. Using a sponge or cloth, rub the stain with the paste. Rinse with warm water.

     13. Clean your toilet with this solution: Dissolve 1/2 cup of borax with 1 gallon of water. Scrub the toilet with a strong brush, let it sit and flush to rinse. This non-abrasive cleaner can also be used in the bathtub or on counters.

     14. Clean outdoor furniture by washing it with this mildew zapping solution: In a spray bottle, mix 1 teaspoon dish detergent, 1 teaspoon borax and 1 quart warm water.

     15. Make your own dishwasher detergent by mixing 1tablespoons borax and 1tablespoons baking soda.

     DEODORIZING

    16. Minimize odor in your cat's litter box by mixing a few tablespoons of borax in with the litter.

    17. Clean your garbage disposal by putting 3 tablespoons of borax down the drain. Let it sit for an hour and flush it with warm water. This will sanitize it, taking care of any smelly bacteria.

    18. Remove mildew and mustiness from linens by soak them in 2 cups of borax mixed with 2 quarts of water. Let the linens sit for a few hours, then rinse them clean.

    19. Unclog drains with 1/2 cup of borax followed by 2 cups of boiling water. Let it sit for 15 minutes, then run your water for a few minutes to flush it out.

     20. Remove urine odor from a mattress. Wet the mattress rub in borax with a damp cloth. Let dry, then vacuum up the remaining residue.

    21. Deodorize and clean your fridge by washing it with a borax and water solution.

    22. Deodorize your garbage pail by filling it with borax and water. Let it soak then rinse it out. Sprinkle some borax in the bottom once it's clean. This will keep the bugs away and absorb any odor causing moisture.

    OTHER USES

    23. Kill weeds by sprinkling borax where you've seen weeds previously appear. This is useful for weeds that surface in concrete cracks and on walkways, but shouldn't be used in the garden because it will also kill your plants. Sprinkle some borax around the perimeter of the house too and you'll be free from ants and other intruding insects.

    24. Soften your water when doing laundry by adding borax to the load.

    25. Bring life back to your worn china by soaking it in a sink full of warm water and a 1/2 cup of borax. Rinse well and wash a second time as usual.

Along with these 25 household solutions, borax is used commercially as an ingredient in enamel glaze, adhesives, ink for indelible pens and is more recently being used in place of Mercury for extracting gold in smaller scale mining operations. In some countries, borax is used as a food additive, but is not approved for use as such in the United States.

Many usues for Tea Tree Oil

    Back to Basics

Aboriginal Australians have known for hundreds of years about the potent medicinal qualities of the oil of the Melaleuca alternifolia plant, otherwise known as tea tree oil. Derived from the plant’s sticky leaves and needles, this “medicine chest in a bottle” is known to cure or quell many a common ailment, from athlete’s foot to headac...hes to your pet’s ear mites.

Tea tree oil is not just soothing and disinfecting, it is capable of penetrating into the lower skin layers with its anti-inflammatory, disinfectant, analgesic (pain-killing) and cicatrizant (wound-healing) qualities.

It has a diaphoretic effect - It promotes sweating - which enhances the body's own natural preventative response when threatened by infection.

Once available only in health food stores and specialty shops, the growing awareness of tea tree oil’s versatility as a healer and helper has reached the mainstream. You can now find the oil in just about any drug, department or grocery store. It is also becoming more common as an ingredient in cosmetics, soaps, shampoo, cleansers, detergents and disinfectants.

    Cures all…costs little

Ranging in price from about $7-12, a single bottle can replace many of the medications, treatments and health products in your medicine cabinet.

The best tea tree oil is organic, and found in dark glass bottles. Never buy tea tree oil (or any essential oil) in clear bottles, or in plastic bottles. Clear bottles allow sunlight to penetrate the oil, which can damage its delicate properties. Plastic can be dissolved by the oil, which in turn can contaminate the oil. Always store it in a cool, dry place, away from sunlight. Tea tree oil is usually clear to very pale golden in color and it exudes a fresh, camphor-like scent.

Tea tree oil’s most outstanding quality is its potency as an anti-fungal. It is used to cure fungal infections such as athlete’s foot, ringworm, dandruff, yeast infections, candida and thrush. But it is also highly effective as an anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-septic. It is deep-penetrating, and is 4-10 times more soothing than aloe.

Common uses for tea tree oil

Below is a small sample of the many uses for tea tree oil. A word of caution-tea tree oil is very pungent and potent. It should only be used externally, and sparingly. It should not be used on babies or small children. Keep it away from eyes and wash you hands after using it. If you, your child or pet find it too strong, try diluting it with water until you find a comfortable potency.

    • Cold sores – Apply pure oil directly to the sore as many times as needed.
    • Acne – Apply pure oil to the blemish.
    • Nasal ulcers – Drip 1-3 drops of oil onto a cotton swab and apply it directly to the sore. Some people find pure tea tree oil to be too strong to use inside the nose, or on any mucous membrane. If this is the case, just dilute it by adding about 3 drops to 1/4 cup of water. Adjust the ratio until it’s comfortable for you.
    • Dental abscess/toothache – Drip a few drops directly into the cavity. Or drip a couple drops on your finger and rub the tooth and surrounding gum. Repeat several times a day, or however often as necessary. This is just for temporary relief, so make sure to get to your dentist as soon as possible. Be careful not to swallow the oil. Ingesting a little bit of the oil won’t hurt you, but always try to spit it out. The taste is also very strong, medicinal and can be unpleasant.
    • Natural mouthwash-Add a couple of drops to a glass of fresh water for a refreshing mouthwash. It’s especially good for sore throats. Take care not to swallow and don’t give it to young children without supervision.
    • Sore throat/throat infection – Gargle with 8-10 drops of tea tree oil diluted in a cup of water. Repeat this two or three times within twenty minutes.
    • Acne/cuts/scrapes/scratches/abrasions – Rub a few drops of pure oil into the cut or pimples. Do not use tea tree oil on deep cuts and wounds.
    • Ear infection – Drip about three drops of tea tree oil into 1/4 cup of water, or adjust the ratio until it’s comfortable for you.  Fill a dropper with the solution and gently fill the ear with it. Hold it in the ear for half a minute and drain. Repeat several times a day or however often is necessary.   Do not put pure tea tree oil into the ear. Also, rub pure oil onto the outer surface of the ear.
    • Boils – Apply two drops to the boil daily for 1-2 months, or as long as necessary. Be sure to do it everyday in order to completely take care of the infection.
    • Ringworm – Apply pure oil daily for at least one month straight. Make sure to do it everyday or the fungus can build up a resistance to the oil.
    • Insect bites – Apply one or two drops directly to the bite.
    • Athlete’s foot – Apply pure oil directly to the feet, on a daily basis for at least a month to make sure the fungus is destroyed. In addition, you can drip several drops into a basin of water and soak the feet.
    • Canker sores – Apply pure oil directly to the sore.
    • Oral hygiene – Add one drop of oil to your toothbrush when brushing your teeth, or put one drop into the crease of your finger, run dental floss through it and floss.
    • Dandruff – Add a few drops to your shampoo.
    • Ear mites – Make a mild solution of tea tree oil and water, perhaps five drops of oil to 1 cup of water. Using a dropper, gently drip about ten drops into your pet’s ear. Also, dip a cotton ball in the solution and clean the inside of the ear.
    • Fleas and other insect infestations – Make a strong solution of tea tree oil and water. Using a spray bottle, spray the liquid onto carpets, floors and other areas where insects lay their eggs.
    • Dust mites with tea tree oil-Rub a tea tree impregnated damp cloth over your mattress to deter dust mites and to keep the mattress fresh.
    • Protect hands-a few drops of tea tree oil in your usual hand cream can make an effective barrier cream for gardeners. Apply to your hands before your gardening gloves to give extra protection from thorns, irritants and bacteria in the soil.
    • Boost immune system-make the most of the immune system enhancing qualities of tea tree oil by adding a few drops to your bath water – particularly soothing when you have a cold.
    • Yeast infections/Eczema-
    • Congestion-Add to a vaporizer to loosen chest congestion.
    • Body Odor-A small amount added to your bath can help with persistent body odor.
    • All-purpose cleaner, combine 2 teaspoons of tea tree oil in 2 cups of water in a spray bottle.
    • Head Lice-Add a small amount to shampoo to destroy head lice.
    • Aromatherapy-tea tree oil is used to treat colds, persistent coughs, acne, toothaches, and sunburn.
    • Sinus infection-Treating sinus infection.
    • All-purpose cleaner-combine 2 teaspoons of tea tree oil in 2 cups of water in a spray bottle.
    • Another all-purpose cleaner- combine 14 ounces of water with 1 ounce of Murphy’s oil soap and 10 drops of tea tree oil.
    • Tile cleaner-Mix the above solution with kosher salt to scrub bathtub and bathroom tiles.
    • Dishwasher-Add a few drops to dishwasher dispenser, then fill with a green dish washing soap.
    • Laundry-A few drops added to each load of laundry leave your clothes smelling cleaner.
    • Mold-Control mold with a tea tree oil/water spray.
    • Mustiness-Remove mustiness with that same tea tree oil/water spray.
    • Germs-To keep germs at bay, spray it on high chairs, car seats, and other high traffic spots.
    • Insects-15 drops in a quart of water can be an effective insect repellent.

Tea Tree Oil is Effective Against

The Epsom Salt Remedy for Arthritis

The sulfates in the Epsom Salt compound flush toxins from the body, help the body absorb nutrients, ease or prevent migraine headaches, and help strengthen joints and serves as a good remedy for arthritis pain.

Epsom Salt has been around for hundreds of years. Made out of magnesium sulfate, claims have long been made about its medicinal properties, including its ability to combat the symptoms of arthritis. Back during Shakespeare's time, people were just starting to discover and study the magnesium sulfate combination. One of the first such studies took place in Epsom, England. Early scientists believed that the sulfates were crystalline structures similar to table salt. Although they were wrong, the substance came to be known as Epsom Salt.

The element magnesium is present in the human body where it plays several very vital roles. Sadly, most Americans don't get enough magnesium from their diets to keep the body running smoothly. Magnesium deficiencies cause the following problems in the body:

    • Arteries become less elastic causing blood clots and sudden heart attack deaths.
    • Muscles and nerves don't function properly.
    • More than 325 body enzymes go unregulated.
    • Insulin is less effective.
    • Oxygen flow to the body is slowed down.
    • The person has more muscle pain and inflamed joints.

Due to magnesium's ability to reduce joint inflammation, it has been used as a home remedy for arthritis for many years. It has been found that the only reason people suffer from all the pain they do is because they lack magnesium in their bodies. If they don't get enough magnesium from their diets, then they need to find other ways to get what they need. There are dietary supplement pills of magnesium for sale commercially, but not everyone can use these effectively. Scientists have learned that the best way to get magnesium into the body is topically through the skin.

The sulfates in the Epsom Salt compound flush toxins from the body, help the body absorb nutrients, ease or prevent migraine headaches, and help strengthen joints. In addition sulfates are responsible for the formation of brain tissue and proteins in the digestive tract.

Magnesium + Sulfates = Epsom Salt

There are mornings when Arthritis patients find it difficult just getting out of bed due to stiff, painful joints. Even bad weather can bring out the worst in arthritic joints. No matter what causes your pain, you can reduce it significantly by using Epsom Salt. In fact, the Epsom Salt Industry Council claims that Epsom Salt is a sedative for the entire nervous system.

A hot Epsom Salt bath is the old New England home remedy for arthritis pain. Just the heat of the bath itself is able to increase circulation and reduce swelling. The Epsom Salt, then, adds properties which reduce pain and joint discomfort. To take an Epsom Salt bath, start by filling your bathtub with water that is as hot as you can tolerate. Then add two cups of Epsom Salt and dissolve them in the water. Stay in the bath for at least a half hour. You can add hot water in order to keep the temperature very warm. Feel free to repeat this treatment as often as you like.

You can also buy commercial lotions which contain Epsom Salt. They can be used to provide temporary, spot treatment on knees, legs, backs, and other body parts. You can massage this cream into your hands to help relieve the pain and reduce the swelling and stiffness of arthritic fingers. It can also be used to soothe achy, burning feet.

    Many Uses for Diatomaceous Earth

    Back to Basics

    TRANSFERRED

    How Diatomaceous Earth Works

2nd: Diatomaceous Earth is very hard. On the hardness scale where diamonds are a 9, Diatomaceous Earth is a 7. This is very important, because as those millions of tiny hard and sharp Diatomaceous Earth cylinders pass through the small and large intestines, they "scrub" the walls. After only a few months ...of taking Diatomaceous Earth, the intestine wall is no longer coated with mucus and molds but CLEAN!! The advantages of this are several:

    1. Regular bowel movements (This is the #1 comment everyone makes about DE)
    2. Healthier Colon. This is especially important as we get older. A clean healthy colon keeps away polyps, cancers, and ulcers. Today, many are spending thousands of dollars to get colonics to do the same thing as Diatomaceous Earth does.

    3. Many users report increased energy and needing less sleep. This is a result of all the food and nutrients that are taken in being better absorbed into the blood stream. With a coated colon--many nutrients never get absorbed.

3rd: A small amount of Diatomaceous Earth gets absorbed into the blood stream as silica.   One of the benefits of Silica is that it helps to destroy bad fats. Everyone that we know that is taking Diatomaceous Earth has lowered their cholesterol by 40-50 points. Everyone is also amazed at how their high blood pressure goes down. Go to the page on "Human Use" and review all of the benefits of silica to the body.

    1. Sore joints and ligaments feel better
    2. Skin clears up (acne-age spots-psoriasis)
    3. Hair and nails are stronger and grow faster
    4. Stronger teeth and gums
    5. Healthier respiratory tract--less coughing
    6. Menopause has less symptoms
    7. Healthier urinary tract

The benefits of silica are many. In today's grains, there is actually a shortage of silica. Years ago, the silica found in our foodstuffs was adequate, but with today's hybrids and depleted soils, only about 1/3 of the silica needed is supplied in our food. Diatomaceous Earth is a simple and inexpensive way to get the silica your body needs.

    Human Use

    FOOD GRADE DIATOMACEOUS EARTH!

1 or 2 Heaping Tablespoons Per Day Will Improve Your Life!

Mix with your favorite liquid and stir occassionally.

                      There is no unpleasant taste.

Our Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth is 89% Silicon Dioxide There is no life without Silica. In 1939, Nobel Prize Doctor Butenant proved that "life can not exist without Silica". In the 2003 book "Water & Salt" Dr. Barbara Hendel states that "Silica is the most important trace element in human health". Silica plays an important role in many body functions and has a direct relationship to mineral absorption. The average human body holds approximately seven grams of silica, a quantity far exceeding the figures for other important minerals such as iron.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF SILICA   (Food Grade DE) Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, Osteoperosis, Weight Loss, Cosmetics, Hair, Nails, Teeth & Gums, Energy, Bacteria, Mucus, Anti-Aging, Urinary Infections, Headache.

My name Is Larry Smith. (I own Earthworks Health). For better health, people like me and my family take one or two heaping tablespoons of Diatomaceous Earth in a liquid every day. Many people benefit from just one teaspoon daily! At my house, we mix it with grapefruit juice. Others mix the DE with water, soda pop, juice, or whatever liquid they like. Some even use DE in protein shakes, applesauce and yogurt. Our Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth is pure. There is no actual flavor or taste to it. Since DE doesn't dissolve, stirring several times while drinking prevents settling. Some people experience higher energy levels, so it is probably best not to take just before sleeping. Not to worry about taking too much, because any excess silica not needed by the body is automatically eliminated through the blood stream, kidneys and intestines. Enjoy!

    Lower High Blood Pressure!

Of the thousands of people that are using Diatomaceous Earth, most that have high blood pressure have reported that it has gone down.  It has been so thrilling to talk to people all over the United States and have them tell their stories. We are not just talking a few points---we are talking about LIFE-CHANGING numbers.  Doctors are amazed--customers are amazed---You will be too.

Just as Diatomaceous Earth has been lowering blood pressure--it has also been lowering cholesterol!!.  I have not talked with one person that has high cholesterol that has not had lower numbers after taking Diatomaceous Earth.  Most are reporting 40-60 points lower after only 2 weeks on DE.  I know it sounds too good to be true, but it works!

Just recieved this feedback from a user:

For Osteoporosis, silica can stop the pain and even restore the body's self repair process. Osteoporosis symptoms attack women primarily after menopause but the degenerative process starts much earlier in their younger days. More women are dying of fractures caused by osteoporosis than of cancer of the breast, cervix, and uterus combined.

Silica is responsible for the depositing of minerals into the bones, especially calcium. It speeds up the healing of fractures and also reduces scarring at the site of a fracture. More and more research evidence shows that through a transmutation process, silica is turned into calcium when it is needed. That is why some scientists refer to silica as a precursor of calcium. Even when calcium is insufficient, the body can turn silica into calcium that the bones need.

    Natural Weight Loss!

We have been getting hundreds of reports from all over the United States that DE is helping people lose weight.  Everyone is saying that DE taken in the morning helps curb their appetite throughout the day.  Just one more reason to take it everyday!!

    Nature's Internal Cosmetic!

In Europe and Asia Diatomaceous Earth is used extensively as a health and beauty product for hair, skin, nails, bones, and joints. They have no FDA.

Tissue degeneration accelerates due to aging when connective tissue develops an increasing inability to retain moisture when left unassisted. Silica can help slow the degenerative process of connective tissue. With silica, vitality and life, which are often lost as the years accumulate, can be naturally maintained or even restored to your skin. Collagen, largely made up of silica, is the glue that holds us together. If our body has enough silica glucosaminoglycane, the collagen will make us look younger. Silica helps with skin problems and injuries including itching, rashes, abscesses, boils, acne, callouses, warts, eczemas, burns, frostbite, benign skin sores, insect bites and bed sores.

If you regularly follow a silica regimen, your skin will keep its young look. A good silica supplementation program works far better than other products for maintaining healthier and longer lasting collagen.

    Hair That Grows!

Hair is nature's greatest beauty enhancer. Hair deserves to be pampered. Hair at 90 micrograms per gram is almost as rich in silica as are healthy bones, which contain 100 micrograms per gram. Silica is a major component of hair. Using a good silica supplement should be part of your ongoing hair care program for revitalizing hair. Silica helps to prevent baldness, stimulates healthier hair growth and assures beautiful shine, luster and strength.

    Teeth and Gums!

By hardening the enamel, silica prevents cavities and preserves teeth. Silica also prevents bleeding gums, gum atrophy, and recession that causes the loosening of teeth, which could ultimately lead to tooth loss. Silica effectively fights ulceration and the decay of bones, teeth and also lessens inflammation.

    Tough As Nails!

Your nail plates are complex protein structures that grow four to five millimeters per month on average. With silica supplementation, fragile nails become normal within a short period of time. Silica will beautify the appearance of your nails and improve their hardness, making them shinier and less prone to breaking.

The restorative effects of silica will be most noticeable on your hair, skin, nails and teeth. Our skin and hair require silica essentially for the same purpose as do other tissues. As we know, the supporting collagen underneath the skin enhances elasticity and beauty. Collagen owes that quality to silica, which provides a beautiful complexion that is more than skin deep.

    MORE BENEFITS!

    • Silica lowers bad cholesterol and raises good
    • Silica fades age spots
    • Silica stimulates metabolism for higher energy levels
    • Diatomaceous earth has a negative charge and bacteria has a positive charge. It is believed that diatomaceous earth sweeps bacteria out of the body by trapping it in its honeycomb shaped skeletal form.
    • Silica supplementation helps repair and maintain vital lung tissues and protects them from pollution. By maintaining or restoring the elasticity of lung tissues, silica reduces inflammation in bronchitis.
    • It acts as a cough decreasing agent. Silica tones the upper respiratory tract (nose, pharynx, larynx) and reduces swelling because of its positive action on the lymphatic system.
    • Silica supplementation keeps menopause free of stress and helps to prevent many unwanted side-effects of menopause
    • Silica works with other antioxidants to prevent premature aging and to preserve youthfulness.
    • Silica can help prevent kidney stones and heal infections of the urinary tract. It is a natural diuretic which can increase excretion of urine by 30 percent, thus flushing the water-excreting system and restoring normal function to these vital organs.
    • The presence of sufficient silica in the intestines will reduce inflammation of the intestinal tract. It can cause disinfection in the case of stomach and intestinal mucus and ulcers. Silica can prevent or clear up diarrhea and its opposite, constipation.
    • Silica will help normalize hemorrhoidal tissues.
    • In regulating and normalizing the bowels, silica has a pleasant side effect; it can alleviate lower back pain, which often troubles the elderly.
    • Silica proves effective with female discharge, abscesses and ulcers in the genital area and cervix, as well as mastitis (especially for breast feeding mothers).
    • The intake of silica acts as a supportive treatment for inflammation of the middle ear. Because of the beneficial effectiveness on the lymphatic system, silica can be used for swelling of the lymph nodes in the throat.
    • Has anti-inflammatory disinfecting, absorbing and odor binding effects.
    • Silica can normalize circulation and regulate high blood pressure (hypertension).
    • Silica can decrease vertigo, headache, tinnitus (buzzing of the ears) and insomnia.
    • Silica can help diabetes by promoting synthesis of elastase inhibitor by the pancreas.
    • Silica can help arterial disease by strengthening the blood vessels. Studies confirm that with age, silica disappears from the aorta, the heart's key blood vessel, thus weakening its critical connective tissue and resulting in a greater cardiac risk.
    • Silica can help prevent Tuberculosis.
    • By improving the elasticity of the joints, silica helps rheumatism.
    • Silica has inhibitory effects on coronary diseases.
    • Silica can help avoiding or alleviating Alzheimer's disease by preventing the body from absorbing aluminum and may flush out aluminum from the tissues. Silica can stimulate the immune system.

Any food grade diatomaceous earth uses other than those approved by the EPA, FDA, or USDA are strictly reports of what hundreds of users as well as we ourselves have done with diatomaceous earth.

    Many uses of Rubbing Alcohol

    Back to the Basics

Humbly-disguised in boring, unattractive packaging, the numerous alternative uses of rubbing alcohol are easy to miss. Sure, it'll ease a sore muscle and cool a fever, but did you know it can also be used to create a nifty ice pack? With several uses, rubbing alcohol is an inexpensive, drugstore wallflower worth a second look.  As a mat...ter of fact, those adorable sweet smelling, fast drying, hand sanitizing gels that pay top dollar for, contain large amounts of alcohol! That's because rubbing alcohol is a potent germ fighter!

Priced to sell between $1.99 (CVS for 70% Isopropyl) and $3.95 for (90% Isopropyl at Amazon.com) a 16-ounce bottle is generally recommended for use in "decreasing germs in minor cuts and scrapes ... and relieving minor muscular aches due to over exertion." But don't stop there.

    Mirror Mirror

The ThriftyFun website suggests using rubbing alcohol on a soft cloth or paper towel to clean old mirrors that have developed a patina or stubborn spots and streaks. The site also notes the same treatment can be given to bathroom mirrors, faucets and counters. "It eliminates germs on many surfaces and cleans them for little cost," enthuses the site.

Does your bathroom mirror attract sticky messes from hair spray and toothpaste? Mine does! It seems not long after I wipe my mirrors clean with Windex a new sticky spot appears. Well, just use some magical rubbing alcohol! Well, actually your regular bottle is the magical potion, but you get the point. If you have a spray bottle, fill it up with some alcohol so as soon as a splat appears on your mirror, its just a spritz and wipe away! Just spritz the sticky mirror mess and wipe a few seconds later. You may need to repeat the step for stubborn toothpaste, but it definitely does the trick!

Rubbing alcohol is 70 percent isopropyl alcohol and 30 percent water, and is safe for contact with the skin. It has a number of general medicinal and household uses. This list of ideas makes having a bottle of rubbing alcohol in the house a good idea

    Disinfectant

Be aware, however, that although rubbing alcohol does disinfect skin, it doesn't promise to sterilize all surfaces. Designated as "the gold standard against which all other skin disinfectants should be measured," by the World Health Organization, it earns an "intermediate level disinfectant" classification by the APIC (Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology) because it won't sterilize surgical instruments (when used alone) or kill hydrophilic viruses (as opposed to the more common and easily-sterilized lipophilic viruses, but you already knew that!).

Consider it a friendly warning for do-it-yourselfers looking to practice at-home surgeries. However, if you're at a point where you need to perform your own operations, you've got bigger fish to fry than finding multiple uses for rubbing alcohol, but I digress.

    Clean bathroom fixtures

Just reach into the medicine cabinet the next time you need to clean chrome bathroom fixtures. Pour some rubbing alcohol straight from the bottle onto a soft, absorbent cloth and the fixtures. No need to rinse -- the alcohol just evaporates. It does a great job of making chrome sparkle, plus it will kill any germs in its path.

    Minimize reactions to earrings

If you take a bit of rubbing alcohol and apply it to the post of your earrings, then it will help the earring insert far more smoothly.  Also, take some rubbing alcohol on a tissue and rub it around your ear.

    Remove Stickiness

Have you ever bought a picture frame only to find that the price sticker won't come off? I mean you tried everything and the residue is still sitting right dab smack on the glass of your new frame. Soak a cotton ball in some plain rubbing alcohol and place the soaked cotton ball on the sticker. The trick is to let it sit for a minute or so until the alcohol has penetrated the sticker and sticky residue. Then rub the cotton ball over the sticker and watch it all just wipe away!

    Remove wax from carpet

If you had a beeswax candle that spilled on your carpet, you can use rubbing alcohol to help remove the wax. Start by pulling the largest clumps of beeswax from the carpet. Once removed, you can dab the carpet with a paper towel soaked with rubbing alcohol to remove the remnants.

    Helps with mosquito bites

Rubbing alcohol can actually help with mosquito bites a lot better than store-bought remedies. Just rub it on the bites and it will dry them out bringing quick relief.

    Dry Erase Board Build-Up

The super solution easily removes build up from dry erase boards, and can be swiped over dirty computer keyboards, cell phones and MP3 players. The surfaces will be cleaner and home to fewer germs. A good thing.

    Natural De-Greaser

Reported to moonlight as a cheap and easy de-greaser, I poured some onto a cloth and wiped down my stove, vent and teapot. It worked great, and cost much less than products marketed to do the same thing. Several websites suggest wiping down all kitchen appliances including chrome to clean and shine. One notes, there is no need to rinse afterwards because the rubbing alcohol dries almost immediately. This technique also scores points for reducing the number of chemicals sprayed around the kitchen and bathroom, similar to using baking soda or vinegar as previously discussed in a WalletPop article entitled, Toothpaste to polish silver? One mom cleans green and finds big savings.

    Easy Ice Pack

Handy rubbing alcohol ice packs can be made by combining one part rubbing alcohol with two parts water in a zip lock freezer bag. Voila! The rubbing alcohol prevents the bag from freezing solid. Ready for emergencies or maybe just the morning after the big office party. Good to be prepared!

    Health and Beauty

Helping out in the beauty and fashion department, rubbing alcohol can substitute for nail polish remover and clean the backs of pierced earrings as well. In a pinch, you can use rubbing alcohol instead of deodorant. Melissa Howard writes on eHow that by adding 15 drops of essential oil to a fine-mist spray bottle filled with rubbing alcohol you will have an instant grooming staple. She cautions to avoid applying immediately after shaving the arm pits.

No More Ring Around the Collar

Reader's Digest also suggests eliminating ring around the collar by swiping your neck with a little rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball or cloth. They claim it's refreshing, but be warned it's also drying to the skin. Don't over-do this one.

    Medical Marvels

eHow notes, however, in the case of mosquito bites and cold sores, dabbing a little rubbing alcohol onto affected areas will dry out the areas (in a good way!), relieve itchiness and reduce the cold sore.

    Candle Cleaner

But wait, there's more. You know those candles that haven't been lit since last holiday season and might have accumulated just the teensiest bit of dust and grime? Dampen a cleaning rag with rubbing alcohol and swipe away the dust -before you light them! Like new. This tip gets two thumbs way up.

    Fire Starter

Speaking of fire, be sure to keep your rubbing alcohol away from heat and flame since it is extremely flammable. Unless of course, you're trying to start a fire -- which I don't recommend as there are far safer methods available.

    Stain Removal

Getting back to tips I do recommend, rubbing alcohol can be used to blot away fresh ink stains on carpet or clothing. For tougher stains, soak the spot in rubbing alcohol for several minutes, then wash.

    Frost Free

This winter, several sites, including Reader's Digest, suggest keeping windows frost free by washing them with a solution of one quart water and a half-cup of rubbing alcohol. Could be worth a try on car windows especially. In fact, simply pouring rubbing alcohol onto frosted car windows will dissolve it immediately. Another item to put in the trunk.

    Fight Fruit Flies

The next time you see fruit flies hovering in the kitchen, get out a fine-misting spray bottle and fill it with rubbing alcohol. Spraying the little flies knocks them out and makes them fall to the floor, where you can sweep them up. The alcohol is less effective than insecticide, but it's a lot safer than spraying poison around your kitchen.

    In The Garden

Lauren Wise advises on the Garden Guides website that rubbing alcohol can also be used to clean garden tools that have been used to remove dead, diseased and rotting plants. "Gardeners don't always consider the fact that this harmful bacteria will be transferred to their garden tools and needs to be removed so it doesn't transfer to healthy plants .... there are many sanitizers that you can use to do this, but rubbing alcohol is something almost everyone has around." Wise advises cleaning off the tools with soap and water and then letting each tool soak individually in rubbing alcohol for about a minute. Wipe the tools with a clean rag that has also been soaked in rubbing alcohol. The tools should dry quickly.

    Sanitizing

You have seen those commercials where the woman wipes down her phone with a Clorox wipe or sprays it down with some Lysol, right? Well, I have a cheaper, even more effective sanitizer for that phone; yup! Good 'ol Rubbing Alcohol will do the trick! You can just wet a paper towel or cotton ball with full strength rubbing alcohol and wipe the phone down. It's fast drying and works great to kill germs and rid your phone of grime. Use it on door knobs too!

Clean a Skipping CD or DVD

When finger prints grace the backside of your DVD's and CD's they are likely to skip and not perform well. A neat, very inexpensive trick is to spritz the CD or DVD with some alcohol and wipe with a clean, lint free cloth. The finger prints will literally dissolve when the alcohol hits it!

    Clean venetian blinds

Rubbing alcohol does a terrific job of cleaning the slats of venetian blinds. To make quick work of the job, wrap a flat tool -- a spatula or maybe a 6-inch (15-centimeter) drywall knife -- in cloth and secure with a rubber band. Dip in alcohol and go to work.

    Keep windows sparkling and frost-free

Do your windows frost up due to the aircon? Wash them with a solution of 1/2 cup rubbing alcohol to 1 quart (1 liter) water to prevent the frost. Polish the windows with newspaper after you wash them to make them shine.

Clean your phone , laptop and keyboard

Is your phone getting a bit grubby? Wipe it down with rubbing alcohol. It'll remove the grime and disinfect at the same time.  One of the advantages of rubbing alcohol is that it evaporates so quickly once you apply it to something

    Remove ink stains

Did you get ink on your favorite shirt or dress? Try soaking the spot in rubbing alcohol for a few minutes before putting the garment in the wash.

    Erase permanent markers

Did Junior decide to decorate your countertop with a permanent marker? Don't worry, most countertops are made of a nonpermeable material such as plastic laminate or marble. Rubbing alcohol will dissolve the marker back to a liquid state so you can wipe it right off.

    Remove dog ticks

Ticks hate the taste of rubbing alcohol as much as they love the taste of your dog. Before you pull a tick off Fido, dab the critter with rubbing alcohol to make it loosen its grip. Then grab the tick as close to the dog's skin as you can and pull it straight out. Dab again with alcohol to disinfect the wound. This works on people too.

Freshen and Stretch tight-fitting new shoes

This doesn't always work, but it sure is worth a try: If your new leather shoes are pinching your feet, try swabbing the tight spot with a cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol. Walk around in the shoes for a few minutes to see if they stretch enough to be comfortable. If not, the next step is to take them back to the shoe store. Also, sprite them to freshen and get rid of odors.

    Not A Cocktail

Whatever you do, don't drink it. Although there is alcohol in the name, rubbing alcohols are mixed with poison (often Methanol) and bitter-tasting additives to prevent human consumption -- and avoid the taxes and fees of a party beverage. As such, it is considered a "denatured" alcoholic product. In fact, it can cause death or permanent injury (think: coma, blindness, seizures, vomiting, confusion, slow breathing, pale or bluish skin) if consumed, which is sobering indeed.

You can also use alcohol to make an emergency heater for your car or bug out bag...

How to Make a Survival Heater for Your Car

    Homemade Canned Heat

Your car survival kit should contain a means to heat your vehicle if you become stranded.

During winter months in the higher latitudes, even on highways near large cities, you and your car can become snowbound for several days with no outside help. Even in warmer locations and during the summer months being able to heat your car during an emergency can mean the difference between survival and not making it.

Do not rely solely on running the engine of you car for heat. Your car may be somehow disabled and not in running condition. You may run out of gas or need all the gas you do have for travel once you are able to move out again. And importantly, running your engine while sitting in the car may expose you to increased levels of carbon monoxide.

Here is how you can make a survival heater for a car that does not require you to use up the gasoline in the tank or expose you to carbon monoxide gas -

How to Make a Car Survival Heater

    What you will need:

    • A roll of unscented toilet paper.
    • A half dozen bottles of unscented 70 to 91% isopropyl alcohol.
    • An empty metal can that is a little taller than the toilet paper roll.
    • A larger metal can such as a 3-lb coffee or large popcorn container.
    • An aluminum pan or pot a little wider than the top of the larger can.

    Choosing the Can

The can for your car survival heater must be metal, preferably unpainted and with the outer paper removed. It can be a one pound coffee can or 30oz fruit can, which will hold the full roll of toilet paper as is. However I have found that smaller 10 or 12 oz cans like those fruit, vegetables, or coffee come in work more to my liking in terms of versatility. More on that later.

    Add the Toilet Paper

Remove the cardboard core from a roll of toilet paper and then take off enough sheets so the toilet paper roll just fits into the can when pushed hard. The key is to make sure there is no space around the toilet paper roll and that it is completely below the rim of the can.

    Position the Car Survival Heater

When you are ready to use your car survival stove, place the can containing the toilet paper into the larger can. This will help contain the flame and keep you or your pets and family from getting too close. Position the car survival heater in an area of the car that is clear for at least 18 inches all around.

I have found that if I move one of the front seats of my vehicle all the way back there is sufficient room for the heater in the middle of the passenger floor space.

    Add the Fuel

Next pour several ounces (not the whole bottle) of the isopropyl alcohol over the toilet paper that is in the smaller can. The paper will absorb the liquid.

    Light the Survival Heater

Next open a window a crack in order to bring in fresh air. Then place a match or lighter carefully against the soaked toilet paper. A small flame will develop that burns slowly and warm enough to heat your car. Be sure the flame is not close to anything within your vehicle that may catch fire.

When the car is warm enough, conserve your fuel by placing the aluminum pan over the car survival heater opening in order to snuff out the flame. When the vehicle cools enough so that you are feeling uncomfortable, add a little more isopropyl alcohol to the toilet paper and light the stove once again.

Four to six bottles of rubbing alcohol will be sufficient to keep your car war for at least 24-hours. To extend your fuel reserves, heat the car to a minimum necessary for warmth and turn off the stove when that point has been obtained.

I prefer to have two of these car survival heaters on hand because I use the smaller 10 to 12 ounce cans. This allows me to run one or both depending upon how cold it is and is therefore more efficient than just one large survival heater.

    My Car Survival Heaters

In the picture above you can see one of my car survival heaters in action. It is made from a 10oz pineapple can. I happened to have an donut shaped aluminum desert mould that fit perfectly on the top of the can which serves to direct the flame a little more. This of course is not necessary. The survival heater is placed inside a 3-lb coffee container.

I find that just one of these car survival heaters will sufficiently warm my vehicle when it is 20 degrees F outside. If it is very cold I can run two of these smaller heaters simultaneously in order to get the car to a warm enough temperature and then use just one off an on again to maintain that level.

Increasing the Warmth of Your Vehicle

There are a number of ways you can increase the warmth of your vehicle, mainly through the use of insulation or reducing the amount of air space you need to heat.

Snow is an excellent insulator and also will help keep winter winds from robbing your vehicle of warmth. If there is enough snow you can bury the vehicle three or four feet, keeping an airway open to one of the doors of your car in order to bring in fresh air and allow access as needed.

If you car is buried in the snow, be sure to place a means of signaling would be rescuers that your vehicle is beneath the surface. Hoist a brightly colored cloth or other object on the car antenna or a stick to mark your location.

Another way to increase the warmth inside your vehicle is to block off unused space. For example, if there is nobody in the back seat then use a blanket, sheet of plastic, or luggage to make a wall between the front and back the car. If natural materials are available, such as evergreen boughs, use them to fill the extra spaces so that there is less airspace to heat.

Because cold air sinks to the lowest portion of your vehicle, try to position yourself so that your legs and feet are level with the seats. Be sure to wear as much warm clothing as possible, including a warm hat or wrap clothing around your head.

If the space in your vehicle is small enough then several bodies will serve to heat the area significantly. Invite other stranded motorists into your car so that you can share body heat. And making the event a social occasion will help pass the time as you await rescue.

Other Uses for the Car Survival Heater

Water may be problem during winter conditions because it is often locked up in the form of ice. You can use your car survival heater to melt snow for drinking water or even for heating meals.

    • Carolyn McElroy Use it to clean mirrors.

    • Casey Reppert One of my jobs we used it to clean tables and steel. I found it to work really well.

James Stephens I actually use denatured alcohol more mostly for cleaning. Working on electrical/electronics just put it in a spray bottle and hose down whatever you are working on then let it dry. Leaves little residue. Rubbing alcohol works to if you can find the stuff with a low enough water content.

      Drawer Spray

      Makes about 1/2 cup

      2 ounces isopropyl alcohol

1/2 teaspoon essential oil of sandalwood

1 teaspoon essential oil of tangerine

...1/8 teaspoon essential oil of spruce

1/8 teaspoon essential oil of lavender, if desired

2 ounces filtered or distilled water

Pour the isopropyl alcohol into a spray bottle, and add the oils, using as much lavender oil as suits you. Add the water and shake to mix. Before using, test the spray on a small section of a drawer—alcohol can dissolve a shellac finish. If the finish is unharmed, spray the empty drawer and allow it to dry before replacing the clothes.

    • Bonnie Comfort I put it in an old spray bottle and spray the inside of my shoes with it. Kills the bacteria and keeps them smelling fresh.

    • Jennifer Hansen Zahm I use it for cleaning glass and to clean countertops if I run out of vinegar or peroxide. I also use it to wipe down doorknobs, non - porous surfaces during once a week. Put rubbing alcohol into a spray bottle with distilled water (2 parts alcohol to one part water) and a drop of essential oil and you can use as an antibacterial spray for hands (instead of gels).

Dianna Annette Well when I get a fever blister/ cold sore ( if I don't keep lips moisturizer and they get too dry I'll get one) I pop them with a sewing needle and apply rubbing alcohol ( yes it burns) but it dries then up.

    • Bonnie Comfort Use it on a Qtip swab to clean the contact on electronic stuff, like the contacts on the cord for charging my cellphone. It had quit working evidently because of dirty contacts, and that fixed it. Yee-haw!!

    • Linda Leach what about the different percentages on the alcohol ... should they be used differently? I use the higher percentage on my pierced ears when they get to acting up .. usually as a reaction to cheap earwires.

    • Rachell Bucklew Hruschak I make air freshner w/it. I don't really measure but I mix about a cup of rubbing alcohol & about a 1/2 tsp- 1 tsp of concentrated fragrance oil (the cheap stuff that sells for $2 for 2oz at retailers) in a spray bottle. The recipe I had ca...lled for 1/2c Vodka to 20 drops of essential oil- I went the cheap route and other then the initial smell of alcohol (which fades in mins) the scent lingers for hours. Much better than any aerosol spray on the market. Once I mixed up a batch of cinnamon nutmeg around the holiday & sprayed it in our bedrooms. We could still smell it the next day :)

    • Debi LeLievre Gray So many great ideas! I love the one for sticky stuff. I save jars to use for food storage instead of plastic, but I have this thing about removing the labels....this should help. Thanks! OrganicSizeMe.com
