NATURAL INSECT REPELLENT

  • Herbal Muscle Rub

You may already have the tools needed to make a fresh herbal preparation:

    • Mortar and pestle

    ...

    • Large sauce pan

    • Double boiler

    • A piece of clean, dry cheesecloth

    • Six 3-ounce sterilized cosmetic jars

    • Six 3-ounce cosmetic bottles

    Ingredients you’ll need include:

    • 1 cup fresh bay leaves

    • 1 cup fresh eucalyptus leaves

    • 1 cup fresh grated ginger root

    • 1 pint pure oil (either extra virgin olive oil, sesame oil, almond oil or sunflower seed oil)

    • 1 pound pure beeswax

    • 1 ounce liquid citric acid OR 100 proof vodka.

    1. Begin by mashing the herbs with the mortar and pestle until they are finely ground together. Then heat them in the oil in the saucepan, stirring over low heat for about an hour. Be careful not to boil or burn the mixture or leave it unattended. After an hour, remove the pan from the heat and set aside. When slightly cooled but still warm, strain the oil and crushed herbs through clean cheesecloth, then discard the herbs. Divide the herbal oil in half and set one half aside.

    2. Melt the beeswax in the double boiler, then mix half of the herbal oil into the melted beeswax along with half the citric acid. Stir the mixture well (Whipping the warm ingredients in a food processor or with a hand-held frother instead of stirring produces a light, creamy preparation.) and let cool slightly. Pour the beeswax mixture into the cosmetic jars, let cool for 30 minutes, then tightly lid all the jars.

    3. Mix the other half of the citric acid into the other half of the herbal oil. Pour it into the cosmetic bottles, let cool and then lid tightly. Label as “Fresh Herbal Muscle Rub” and store out of sunlight until use or give as gifts.

To use: Use the creamy rub on sore muscles and aching joints; use the oil during gentle massage. They both work well to ease hip and leg joint pain and stiffness of elderly pets. I suggest adding a few drops of the oil to hot bath water for a soothing steam bath, which also helps sinuses and congestion. You can also make wraps. Soak large gauze strips in hot water, remove them from the water, wring out excess, add some oil and wrap aching ankles or wrists or lay on sore muscles.

FYI: Ginger root is available at most grocers, and fresh bay and eucalyptus leaves will be easier to find locally on the west coast and in the south than in northern areas. For those in the midwest and north, finding fresh bay leaves and eucalyptus leaves may be more challenging. Try health food markets with fresh produce, local florists or online sources

Black Salve Recipe

2 Tablespoons Bee's Wax

3 Tablespoons Cocoa Butter

3 Tablespoons Shea Butter

2 Tablespoons Jojoba Oil

1 Tablespoon Vitamin E

1 Tablespoon Honey Powder (some grocery stores will order it for you)

2 Tablespoons Activated Charcoal Powder (look in vitamin store)

3 Tablespoons Kaolin Clay

Optional : Herbal Extracts, Essential Oils - depending on what you're using the salve for

8 1/2 ounce clear jars

Black Salve is touted to do everything these days, including curing cancer. I will be staying off the cancer topic, but this is the old fashioned salve everyone used to have in the house. What it does best is absorb toxins. The common use for it is to put a glob of it on a bee sting, slivers or a cut. It sucks out the poisons! No home should be without it.

First Step:

Put Bees wax, cocoa butter and shea butter in a small pot and heat. You want to keep it at 180 degree for at least 15 minutes. This is easier than it sounds. Just heat it on medium high until it is melted. Turn off the burner and let it sit. It should still be over 180 in 15 minutes. :)

Second Step:

Add the rest of the ingredients and stir until well blended. The easy place to buy Activated Charcoal is in your local health food store or herbal medicine store. You'll probably have to open a lot of capsules, but it is the stuff you need for this.

Third Step:

Feel free to add any relevant herbal extracts to the formula just before you spoon it in. You want to make sure it is very cooled off before adding any extracts, essential oils, or fragrance.

Fourth Step:

Once it is smooth, spoon into 1/2 ounce jars. Give a jar to everyone you know. They will thank you for it!

Drawing Salve Home Remedy

By Denise Wang, eHow Contributor

updated: June 21, 2010

A drawing salve is defined as an ointment or poultice that literally draws out infection, poison and even splinters, debris and other small items that may fester below the skin's surface, causing pain and inflammation. A natural remedy based in many culture's folk medicine and lore, a drawing salve can be made using a variety of inexpensive, available ingredients for effective treatment for anything from boils to ingrown hangnails and relieving pain and inflammation from spider poison and poison ivy or oak.

Difficulty:

 Easy

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Honey
  • Turmeric powder
  • Powdered ginger
  • Sea salt
  • Olive or vegetable oil
  • Herbs
  • Glass jar
  • Beeswax
  • Plastic kitchen wrap
  1. Simple Salve

    • 1

Mix ingredients for a drawing salve in a glass or metal bowl. Combine 1 tbsp. of honey with 1 tsp. of turmeric powder.

    • 2

Add 1/2 tsp. of ginger powder and a pinch of sea salt.

    • 3

      Blend the ingredients well.

    Infused Salve

    • 1

Fill a small canning jar with an herb or herbs of your choice. You can use lavender, camphor, calendula, rosemary or peppermint. Pour olive oil into the jar so that the herbs are covered. Place the jar near the pilot light of your stove or in the sunshine for about two weeks, changing the location to keep the infusion warm.

    • 2

Take about 2 oz. of beeswax and place in the top of a double-boiler on the stove. Melt it, but don't let it boil.

    • 3

Add small amounts of the infusion containing your herbs into the beeswax and then stir. Add small amounts at a time. Test consistency by taking a dollop and placing it on a piece of glass or a saucer. Then, if necessary, add more beeswax or oil into the mix until it is the consistency that you want.

    Using the Salve

    • 1

Spread the salve onto a boil, scrape, blister, splinter or other sore spot. Take the salve out of the jar with clean fingers or a piece of clean cloth, a tongue depressor or clean popsicle stick to spread the salve.

    • 2

Wrap a section of plastic kitchen wrap around the salve to keep it warm.

    • 3

Leave the wrap and the salve on the boil or other injury for a day or two, for best results. In most cases, this is all that is needed to cure many minor skin injuries, insect bites and minor skin infections.

Healing Sunburn

Proponents say that tomatoes are useful for healing sunburn. Tomato can be used to transform a painful sunburn into a modest tan.

Soak peeled tomato slices in buttermilk. Apply them directly on the skin affected. It will close up the pores and relieve the pain.

Alternately, make a puree out of thinly peeled tomatoes. Add a little buttermilk (don’t add too much; it will make the mixture runny.) Spread this mixture over the sunburned skin. This will give a tan over the spot where the sunburn used to be!

Heals Wounds and Sores

Tribal medicine men often prescribed poultices made from the leaves of wild tomato to heal wounds and sores. You can get the benefit of the wound healing property of tomato from the fruit also. Take a slice of fresh tomato; wrap it around the finger. Apply an adhesive tape to hold the tomato in place. Change the tomato slices 2-3 times a day. The infection (bad wounds and pus) will normally clear within 2-3 days.

Restores Vitality – For Persistent Fatigue

Hypoglycemic people (those who have low blood sugar) are beset with constant fatigue and lack of energy. Tomatoes are useful in rebuilding their strength. Tomato affect this process three ways:

Tomatoes contain several naturally occurring sugars. These account for nearly 50% of the total dry matter. Ripe tomatoes are especially high in glucose and fructose.

Tomatoes stimulate liver mechanism. Doctors at Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan reported that fresh tomato juice was extremely effective in accelerating the glycogen (blood sugar) formation in normal rabbits.

Tomato seeds are a great source of protein. Scientists say that tomato seed protein is similar to that of sunflower.

Restores the Health of the Liver

Tomatoes play a key role in liver health.

Russian doctors prescribe tomatoes in the diets of factory workers exposed to toxic chemical. Tomatoes are useful detoxifiers because of the presence of chlorine and sulphur, two very important detoxifying trace elements. 100 grams of uncooked tomato contains 51 mg. of chlorine and 11 mg. of sulphur.

Natural chlorine helps to stimulate the liver. It assists liver in its task as an important filter for body wastes. Tomato also assists the liver in removing the toxic waste products from the system.

Sulphur helps to protect the liver from cirrhosis and other debilitating conditions.

Drinking fresh tomato juice can help to regenerate the damaged, destroyed or surgically removed liver.

Tomatoes help promote the health and well-being of liver. “A tomato a day, keeps the liver in good stay!,” according to John Heinerman, noted author and herbalist.
